A Message from Mike Curtis - Principal
Dear Families
This term has been incredibly productive and engaging for our school community. From enriching student experiences in learning to the ongoing building projects, there is much to share. Below is a summary of some key highlights and updates on what’s happening around the school:
Building Project Update: Progress and Challenges
The building project remains a central focus. While we are excited about the new facilities that will support our growing school, we understand the frustration surrounding the pace of progress. The reality is that our school’s expansion is outpacing the speed of the project.
We share your anticipation for the commencement of these works and, while progress has been slower than expected, we are doing everything we can to ensure a positive outcome for our students and staff.
Pool Refurbishment: A Mixed Journey
Our swimming pool refurbishment is another point of both excitement and some frustration. Just as the refurbishment was completed, a technical failure in one component has delayed the pool’s return to use.
Fortunately, the issue was purely a case of bad timing. The dehumidifier, essential for the pool’s operation, has been entirely rebuilt onsite, ensuring uninterrupted use for many years to come.
We explored external options for swimming lessons, but logistical challenges such as inaccessibility, fully booked venues, and safety concerns made these alternatives unworkable. Our onsite pool remains the safest and most inclusive way to provide swimming opportunities for our students. We kindly ask for your patience as we work toward reopening it.
School Review: Positive Reflections and Future Steps
Recently, we completed our whole-school review, an important process that evaluates our performance in key areas such as student outcomes, teaching quality, and leadership. The review identifies strengths and areas for improvement, providing recommendations to enhance school effectiveness.
Thank you to the parents who participated in discussions. Your feedback is invaluable. The review was overwhelmingly positive, with commendations on our efforts and some useful suggestions for future improvements. We look forward to implementing these recommendations to further enrich the learning experience for all students.
Curriculum Update: History Comes to Life
This term has demonstrated the success of using History as a context for learning English and Maths. Our students have been deeply engaged in topics like ancient Egyptian mummies, pets of that era, and archaeological digs, bringing history to life while enriching learning across the curriculum. The results have been fantastic, and it’s been wonderful to see the excitement in our students’ learning.
We are incredibly proud of our staff and students for their dedication and passion. Despite challenges like the building delays, we are confident that these improvements will greatly benefit our school in the long run.
Thank you for your ongoing support and patience. We look forward to an exciting term ahead as we continue to work together for the success of our school.
Warm regards
Mike Curtis
Principal
A Message from Chrissy Hamilton - Deputy Principal
This term our Middle Years students attended school camp, at Tallebudgera Outdoor and Environmental Education Centre. Camp is a rite of passage for our grade 5 & 6 students, and every effort is made to ensure our students medical, social and emotional needs are met, whilst creating fun memories and friendships beyond the classroom. Camp is a supported environment, where students can try a variety of activities to the best of their abilities and interests. This year we did rock climbing, canoeing, circus skills, kite making, archery, beach skills and movie night. We had fabulous weather, superstar students and a dedicated fun loving staff. We thank our families for entrusting us with their children, as this is often the first time our students are away from home. Many thanks to MOSS staff for generously volunteering their time.
Kind regards, Chrissy
A Message from Katie Bartholomaeus - Deputy Principal
“Teachers have three loves: love of learning, love of learners, and the love of bringing the first two loves together” Scott Hayden
Term 3 has been a busy term of professional learning for our staff. Each Monday afternoon staff have had the opportunity to engage in interactive and practical professional development sessions. The presentations were led by our very experienced DoE Therapy team, Advisory Visiting Teachers and our MOSS Middle Leaders. It is wonderful that we have an abundance of collective knowledge in the MOSS team and that staff are willing to share their experience to build capacity across the school. These topics are prioritised and selected from the student learning needs identified in the ICP’s and PLGs. Our Hub Leaders presented their Hub projects to the whole staff. This was a great way for everyone to see what is happening in all the different parts of the school. As a school we ran 4 full days of Team Teach Training. Team Teach is a program designed to focus on Positive Behaviour Support approaches, with an emphasis on de-escalation and risk reduction. We now have more than 60 of our staff trained. This helps us to align our attitudes, skills and knowledge, and ensures we have a common, proactive and positive approach to working with students with complex communication and behaviour needs. We look forward to more professional learning and development opportunities in term 4.
A Message from Sandra Schuptar - HOSES - ECDP
Another busy term that has just flown by. We started the term with approximately 85 children registered for the ECDP and today we are now at 110. Next term we will welcome another 4 new families to our program.
This term we also welcomed Coralie Harris as our new office administrator. Coralie is doing a wonderful job and has become a great support for our teaching team and our families. Welcome Coralie onto our team.
Term 3 is a difficult term for our families particularly as they are making decisions about transitioning into full time education. Families visit their local schools and begin the conversations about their child's education needs. Term 4 is the term where schools offer and confirm enrolments. Term 4 is also the term where schools visit the ECDP to gather information and strategies that will support successful transition for 2025.
In the middle of the term our children engaged in Book Week Celebrations and so many came dressed up as their favourite characters. A big thank you to our families for making the effort to dress their child for this special occasion.
A Message from Caron Gabriel - Head of Department - Curriculum
Celebrating Success Across the Curriculum
The Curriculum Compass
As we reach the close of Term 3, I would like to extend heartfelt congratulations to our teachers and parents for a truly inspiring and curriculum-filled term. From the Mini Olympics in Greece to exploring the wonders of ancient Egypt, our students have delved deep into the magical worlds of history. They’ve embraced every moment of awe and curiosity, bringing the ancient world to life in their learning.
Our commitment to AAC continues to shine brightly, with the “AAC Gotchas” initiative demonstrating wonderful engagement. Both teachers and students have become increasingly proficient in using their communication devices, and it’s clear that this progress has had a positive impact on daily interactions. The effort, enthusiasm, and dedication from both staff and students have been extraordinary.
Moreover, the integration of informative texts - focusing on history, science, and HPE - into our learning across the curriculum approach has been a welcomed enhancement. The connections made between subjects have enriched students’ understanding and broadened their learning experiences, preparing them for future academic success.
It has also been my pleasure to interact with students daily during their breaks in the hubs. They have enthusiastically embraced a culture of books and reading, which has been a true joy to witness. Our students’ passion for learning continues to grow, fueled by their natural curiosity and love for exploration.
Please enjoy the beautiful photos below as evidence of the incredible work and exciting learning adventures our students have embarked upon. All things are possible when we come together with a shared vision for success!
Have a well-deserved break, and we look forward to another exciting term ahead!

MOSS Marathon
Students, staff and members of our community successfully worked together to achieve a marathon distance of 42.2kms by walking, running, wheeling or riding around our campus. Tally stations around the school were used to measure our distance and the P&C kept track of our fundraising efforts. A massive $10k was raised towards updating sensory room equipment. A marathon finale event was held to celebrate this fantastic achievement and to complete the remaining distance. Thanks to the P&C who provided a sausage sizzle, soft drinks and prizes for hubs.
Delta Therapy Classroom Canine Program
Term 3 has seen the start of our partnership with Delta Therapy and their Classroom Canine program. We welcomed Tessa and Missy to our school and have been working on a schedule that will eventually give all our students the opportunity to experience time with Missy, our therapy dog. We are prioritising regular quality time during a number of weeks to build on the benefits of this program for each group of students. Social and communication skills alongside personalised learning goals can be supported through student engagement with Missy and we look forward to rolling this experience out to all our students.
Rotary Club of Brisbane, Centenary
The school is very appreciative of the time and effort put in on our behalf by Rotary Centenary to secure a Rotary District grant for a new school trailer. A huge MOSS thank you to Di Scotte and her team for their continued support of our school. We look forward to celebrating the arrival of our new trailer which is much needed and will be a valuable addition to our school.
Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) at MOSS!
This term students have worked hard to learn, practice and demonstrate specific behaviours. Students focused on Being Safe - moving safely, keeping their feet on the floor and checking in; Being Respectful - watching out for others and being a good sport; and Being your Best - having a go, being ready to learn and being a good friend. Students were able to apply their knowledge in everyday activities, outdoor learning, sports days and school camp. Here are some students who have celebrated their achievements this term:
Behind the scenes, the PBL team have been working on updating and refining the specific expectations and the associated lesson plans, growing our resource bank and exploring and ordering PBL visuals and signs for around the school. There is a lot of work happening in this space and we are excited to continue ensuring PBL at MOSS is visually impactful, relevant, exciting and celebrated.

Sports Day
Our Sports Day was characterized by the vibrant energy of our two enthusiastic teams. The Yellow Team, led by Vice Captain Maddy Gordon and Captain Aidan Hill, showcased their competitive spirit and teamwork throughout the day. On the other side, the Green Team, guided by Vice Captain Dan Havill and Captain Izzy Hyunh, demonstrated impressive skill and determination.
Monday and Tuesday were packed with a variety of engaging activities that catered to all interests and abilities. Students had a blast participating in events such as cross-country races, obstacle courses, water play, and playground games. Each event was designed to be inclusive and enjoyable, with students earning valuable points for their respective houses.
One of the highlights of the Wednesday was the spectacular performance by the Centenary SHS dancers, who captivated us with their energy and talent. Their performance set a lively tone for the rest of the day's festivities. The excitement continued with our thrilling relay races, where teams cheered each other on and showed incredible sportsmanship. The day concluded with a lively dance party, bringing everyone together to celebrate the day's achievements.
The competition was fierce, with both teams giving their best. In the end, the Yellow Team emerged victorious with a final score of 126 points, narrowly edging out the Green Team, who finished with 118 points. Congratulations to both teams for their outstanding performances and to every student for their enthusiasm and effort.
We extend a heartfelt thank you to all the parents, staff, and volunteers who helped make Sports Day a memorable event. Your support and involvement were crucial in ensuring the day was enjoyable for everyone. Special thanks to our dedicated staff members for their hard work in organizing the event and making it a success.
Kind regards, Eric Smyth - HPE Teacher

D/E Hub
Unbelievable as it may seem, we are at the end of Term 3. And what an action-packed term it has been. This term the students of D and E hub have enthusiastically participated in Book Week Celebrations, the MOSS Marathon and MOSS Sports Day. They have also engaged in lots of interesting curriculum activities.
Science in particular has been lots of fun this term. Our students have been learning about forces and how things move. They have engaged in lots of hands-on activities to see what happens when we push, pull and roll things. They have built giant towers from cardboard boxes and pushed them over to discover that when you push things they move away from you, they have been pulled around the playground on the scooter boards to see that when you pull something it gets closer. They have been rolling cars and balls down ramps and investigating what things do and don’t roll. We have also had lots of fun exploring magnets and what things are attracted to a magnet and what things aren’t. So much to learn but being an investigator is so much fun.
During our fortnightly P.E lessons, our fantastic PE teacher Eric has been getting everyone fit and ready for the cross country and obstacle course activities for sports day. And on the big day it all paid off. The students in D and E hub did a brilliant job running and walking the cross-country course (in some pretty hot weather) and showed off their improved balance and coordination skills in the obstacle course. The day finished with lots of enjoyable activities in the MP playground and even a bit of waterplay to cool everyone down after a hot day’s work. Thanks for all your hard work, Eric and well done to the students.
Book Week was another highlight, featuring a special visit from our amazing teacher aide, Sandy Sirriss. Sandy delighted the students by reading "Room on the Broom" while dressed as a witch and carrying her own broomstick. The students interacted beautifully with Sandy and the story. So much fun.
Finally, we recently celebrated Teacher Aide Appreciation Week. We are incredibly grateful for our dedicated team of teacher aides in D and E Hub. To show our appreciation, the teachers organized a special morning tea with delicious treats and a chance for the team to relax and enjoy some well-deserved downtime. A huge thank you to our teacher aides for your hard work and dedication. You truly make a difference!
Here’s to a safe and relaxing holiday for all and we are all looking forward to more learning adventures in Term 4.
A/B Hub
Term 3 in A/B hub has been an action-packed term filled with learning, fun, and memorable experiences. Here's a look back at some of the highlights:
School Camp
A group of our students had an amazing time at school camp! From kite making and circus skills, to exploring the great outdoors with canoeing, the giant swing and beach games, everyone embraced the challenges and enjoyed making new friendships. Camp was an excellent opportunity for our students to step out of their comfort zones, develop independence, and work together as a team.
Sports Day
Sports Day was a fantastic celebration of fitness, fun, and school spirit. Students showcased their athletic skills in a variety of events. It was wonderful to see the enthusiasm and determination of all our participants, not to mention the support and cheers from our families.
Book Week
Book Week Dress-Up Day brought creativity and fun into the A/B hub as students and staff came dressed as their favourite book characters. We loved to see so many of our students dress up and we saw a variety of costumes.
Playtimes this term have been so positive. Students have been making the most of our playground, sharing the equipment and developing their social skills. It’s been wonderful to see the progress they have made with turn-taking and engaging in different play like chase and the flying fox.
This term we started a journey back in time, learning about the wonders of Ancient Egypt. Students have explored Egyptian culture, history, and the mysteries of the pyramids. We’ve also continued our AUSLAN learning, where students are learning specific communication skills in Australian Sign Language.
We are proud of all the achievements this term and look forward to finishing the year on a high note. Thank you to our students, staff, and families for your ongoing support and enthusiasm!

K Hub
K4 have enjoyed our cooking lessons this term, focusing on procedural writing (recipes). Students have done a fantastic job creating recipes that include ingredients, equipment, and method, then following these recipes to make various food items. So far, we’ve made toasted sandwiches, chocolate muffins, pizza, chocolate crackles, and chocolate and coconut balls. We also rate our food out of 5 stars and describe what we’ve made. Students have practiced safe food handling, and each week we write a shopping list for the following session. We love having our photo taken during lessons and writing a sentence about it. In digital technology, we are learning how to use a computer and practicing typing. We’ve also been exploring interactive games on the whiteboard and engaging with Reading Eggs to practice our technology skills. K4 are very proud of their learning this term!
C/J1 Hub
C/J Hub have been getting active with the MOSS Marathon prompting us to get in a daily dose of physical activity. We know physical movement has many positive benefits, including assisting with emotional regulation and raising mood, especially for teenagers. Participating students enthusiastically participated in the Darling Point Fun Run too. The weather was glorious, so the stroll alongside the bay was a wonderful opportunity for our students to connect to nature as the sunshine shimmered on the water. The sausage sizzle at the end of the 4km was a hit too!
C/J hub learners have enthusiastically embraced our integrated unit on Ancient Egypt. We’ve created lots of amazing art work while learning about mummies, pharaohs, pyramids, a sarcophagus and tombs. Students have explored a range of information texts, including books, fact sheets and videos, to identify and recall factual information about the location, daily life, beliefs and cultural practices of Ancient Egypt. This has been meaningful for our students, as they have been able to recognise differences and make comparisons between life in the ancient past and their own life, in present times.
Students have been learning all about how to write an information text, with lots of modelled writing and joint text construction. The specific features of information texts such as factual information, headings, pictures, labels, diagrams, contents page etc are becoming more familiar to our learners. Our students have been exploring a range of digital tools, not just for investigation and research, but also in preparation of creating their own multi-modal information report about Ancient Egypt.
While, non-fiction or information texts are emphasised in our current unit with students identifying and recalling facts and information about Ancient Egypt, there’s a continued emphasis on building comprehension skills with shared/guided reading of high quality children’s literature. Hub classes continue to focus on key texts, relevant to student’s needs and interests, as well as encouraging daily independent reading. Literacy isn’t just confined to the classroom, so we have also been offering students the opportunity to participate in ‘Reading Club’ on Wednesday at lunchtimes. What better place to read than outside on a picnic rug? Or with some different friends? Or with different reading material – maybe a newspaper, catalogue, comic or poster?
Our student’s love of books in CJ Hub shone through in Book Week with great participation in the dress up day, and in the shared reading of ‘Room on the Broom’ by Juliet. C/J Hub celebrated ‘Reading is Magic’ when they came together for a dramatic, interactive reading complete with the 'Witch’ character. Many thanks to Juliet for making Book Week memorable for the Hub!
Rotational hub activities have continued in middle session on Fridays, with a focus on maths and science to reflect out integrated unit on ‘Forces’. Activities are short, focused, hands on and target building student science/maths understanding and skills, as well as developing Personal and Social Capabilities and communication. As students progress through Lower Secondary, it’s important to focus on maximising self-management skills, such as persisting with new tasks and showing adaptability. For some students, this might be learning the skill of moving to a new space, or following directions from less familiar staff or staying in the right place, while maintaining emotional regulation. For others, it might be making a choice to complete a task, persevering to complete a task when at first unsuccessful, or listening to feedback to approach a task in a new way.
Weekly rotations allow students to engage with different teaching staff, in other learning spaces often with unfamiliar or new materials and concepts. This works well to create interest and novelty, and students have engaged enthusiastically. Activities this term have included push/pull experiments using a range of toys, exploring the impact of force on movement of different shaped objects, experimenting with ramps, floating/sinking to investigate the force of water, and how forces act on objects in different ways, such as flight. We’ve also started to move into the world of sound, investigating force and how sound waves travel. Using the information gathered from observations during initial investigations, we’ll move into applying our knowledge to sort and classify how object movement can be impacted by different forces.
Learning about mummies in Ancient Egypt has been particularly captivating for our students. We’ve learnt how cats and other animals, even crocodiles, were mummified and placed inside tombs. Following recipes to make Egyptian food has been a popular activity. Reading the story of Egyptian Cinderella, with a pharaoh travelling the Nile River to search high and low for the owner of a red slipper engaged students in C1. Classes have enjoyed measuring length and distance using parts of their own body, such as feet, hands or steps. Exploring capacity at the water tray was interesting, as students learnt different shaped containers may hold the same amount. Making shape pictures, building 3D shapes and identifying shapes in the environment has supported students to further their understanding of shape in maths.
J1 students have been learning about 2D and 3D shapes, their features, how to draw and make them too. In measurement students have used uniform informal units of measurement to compare length, capacity and mass. J1 students have also been reading informative and imaginative texts about Ancient Egypt. The class has used technology to create digital books about Ancient Egypt which they will print out next term.
Weekly Hub PBL (Positive Behaviour for Learning) awards continue to be a highlight for students. Students are eager to hear if they have earnt an award and enjoy celebrating the achievement of their peers too! CJ Hub is working hard at being safe, respectful and responsible for an end of term reward. Do I hear music? There’s a disco coming up for C/J Hub in Week 10 on Thursday!

H/I Hub
We have had a busy term with lots of special events including Book Week, Camp and Sports Week. These special events are opportunities for us to join in with the rest of the school to celebrate and learn about ourselves and others.
H/I students have also been very busy engaging in learning experiences relating to the curriculum. We have focus texts every two weeks to help us organise our learning. This term our texts are informative texts including books, videos and PowerPoints. We have explored information relating to ‘Space’, ‘Different Cultures’, ‘Forces’, ‘Shapes and Sizes’ and ‘Pyramids and Mummies’. Concrete objects and sensory play are highly motivating. We have so much fun exploring a variety of topics using our senses. The concentration and joy are evident on our faces. As we explore the objects, Aided Language Displays and our AAC systems facilitate communication development and build our topic related knowledge. Finding the Pharoah’s treasure and pretending to be a ‘Mummy’ were highlights in exploring Ancient Egypt.
In Maths and Science, we have been exploring shapes, size and different forces. Rolling, pushing, pulling and throwing different sized and shaped objects to find out “what will happen?” has been very engaging and hands on. Using switches connected to items such as hairdryers and blenders has facilitated exploration for students who have limited mobility or strength. Using a hairdryer to push different sized balls along a tray towards a friend was a highlight in I2.
J Hub
Term 3 has been bustling in J hub! Continuing in our Inter-programming model, students have been participating in Technology, Literacy and Numeracy, Sport & Mobility, Community Based Learning, Dance & Music, Human Relationships Education and Independent Living Skills. The main focus as always in our Senior School is sampling work and leisure programs and post-school options in the community to be able to make informed decisions about preferred programs, activities and work and volunteering opportunities. Our Cert 1 group have been particularly busy planning and running a very successful book fair as well as maintaining the community garden plot at Seventeen Mile Rocks parklands.
